Old Door, New Purpose

So a bunch has been going on and we meant to write last week but honestly I forgot. We have been super excited about the wedding planning and getting things along but we have neglected to work on the blog and get things ready and update the outside world.

What I wanted to post about was our fabulous headboard. If you follow us on Instagram (@adventuresofae) we put on our pages the beginning of the door project. This took longer than expected because it was not our priority and it took longer to strip off the paint.

We found this door on sale at an antique store and it just spoke to me. I love the panels and it had seen it share of wear but it could flourish with some TLC and love.

I first scrapped and scrapped the paint off of the door taking off the hinges and hardware. Once I was able to get the front two layers pretty much off as you can see I then was able to take the sander to it. This was a messy process but worked really well.

From the sanding we then were able to paint one coat to see if we liked the color. We knew we wanted to add accent on the top to create a pho ledge so that took some time trying to figure out what would be best. We found a piece of crown molding that we used some extra hands and vices to attach with nails and glue and then we found a really

cool piece of baseboard that we cut to fit on the top to attach to the crown molding and the back of the door.

Then we were able to paint the door a second coat and the crown molding and baseboard and it came out great.

Next it was trying to figure out how to attach the door to the bed frame without either breaking. The best idea that we had was to take 2 - 2x4 boards and attach the board to the thick part of the door. So the 2x4's run pretty much the width of the door leaving about 15-17 inches of 2x4 exposed at the bottom. We drilled holes in the 2x4 at the bottom and then using 2 bolts on each side attached the 2x4 's to the door.

First we tried it on one wall in the bedroom and it was really cute but decided we wanted it under our artwork.

We took the bolts back off the bed frame, recut the 2x4's so the bed would fit under the artwork, redrilled the bolt holes and reattached it to the frame.

This was a simple fix. Now we love the new headboard to our bed and something we can call ours and we worked on together.
