Bodie Lighthouse

Bodie Lighthouse.

I think I have heard this pronounced differently every single time someone has said it. So pronounce it how you will. Once we finished climbing Hatteras and then getting food at a little dive we made our way back up the coast and checked out Bodie Lighthouse. It has a very distinct entrance and it was fun to drive through two old houses that are at the front of the entrance and then follow the road around the bends and then opens up to an additional house and the stunning lighthouse.

This was a great little stop on our adventure. We bought tickets to climb the lighthouse and didn't realize that the tickets were for an hour later then we were there. We thought we could just go ahead and walk around the grounds and check out what it had to offer. There was a really neat dock that we walked out and hung out. You could see the fish swimming and the crabs walking about in the shallow water. It was a great day so we spent time just hanging out and reading the pamphlet on the lighthouse.

The really interesting part of this lighthouse was the steps were not connected to the lighthouse except at the platforms. Because  of the structure of the building the national parks service wants you to only have one person on each set of steps as you climb the lighthouse to reduce the stress on the lighthouse.

So you would look up and wait till the next person got to the top of the platform and it gave you time for rest in between the climb. The top of the lighthouse had a great view. From the front you could see the ocean and the back you could see the inter-coastal waters and you could look down to the inlet.
