Advent Day 16
Zechariah 6:12-13 ~ 12 Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord. It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’
Have you ever seen an oak tree? I think these are one of my favorite trees. I love how thick and how big their branches can get. Their bark has this unique characteristic and their roots grow so deep and strong. I love the oak trees that are in front of old buildings or plantations and all the history that they have seen over the years. It is truly a moment when I wish the leaves and bark could open and talk like grandmother willow on Pocahontas. The wisdom that the trees could tell you of what not to do. The imagery that God comes like a branch can have so many meanings. Branches provide support, structure, shelter, it holds other branches and leaves up. Branches form a tree. Just like many parts form the body and all play a part so does a branch. The Old Testament is written in a way that you get to imagine scripture in a new light. Branching out requires effort and requires being in uncharted territory. Jesus is our foundation at Christmas. He is the reason that we gather together. He is the reason that we give and we care for one another. He is the reason that we celebrate. Let's not forget the true reason of the season and branch out in new ways to reach other and spread his love.
