Even the little things.
Today I am having some much needed introvert recoop time. As all of you know I function as an extrovert 98 percent of the time but when I get most recharged is when I am by myself and just piddling. This morning I have been blessed to be able to do that. One of the other staff members did not feel good monday so she was out all that day and part of yesterday. Now that she is better I have taken some time while the group headed to the myan ruins this morning to just relax. I came to the hotel where one of the other groups are staying and I got to take a HOT shower... WHAT A CONCEPT! I forgot what those felt like.
Each day we are learning so much we are beginning to understand the Belize culture more and more and in some aspects I am sad to say I believe we are becoming immune to the problems/ poverty that we continuously see around us. However I have started a list of 100 things I am learning in Belize this summer and I am going to share the first ones that I have written down in hopes that by the end of the summer I will have 100. You know me and lists! Anyway here goes:
Top 100 Things I am learning in Belize.
1. Sanitation is a matter of Opinion not a standard
2. Become friends with the Mosquitos because they are bigger than you.
3. Moisturizer is sunscreen, and foundation is bug spray.
4. Hitting every pothole in the road and some not on the road, is a Belizian Right of passage.
5. Chicken rice and Beans can be served each meal, and it taste different each time.
6. Speed bumps are the speed limit.
7. It can flood like Noah in 2.5 seconds flat
8. Belizian Granddads or pastors can wear chuck taylors, and jean shorts.
9. Belizian time is always a matter of suggestion and 20 minutes means 2-3 hours
10. Really really far away can be 5 miles
11. Some drives can take 2 hours for 28 miles
12. Dirty is only when you smell your clothes through the plastic bag.
13. Cinnamon rolls are required for sustenance. From the Mennonites is preferred.
14. In belize the sun is hot... Get used to it.
15. Bikes are a legitimate form of transportation for 2 if not more people.
16. Wate and juice comes in bags with or without straws.
17. It is permitted if not preferred to pass people while going over speed bumps.
18. Tractors can and will pass you on both sides of the road at the same time.
19. Belize pineapple is the best ever eaten, especially the ones grown by a belize pastor.
20. Make sure your car has great shocks, if not make sure that your body does.
21. 6:15 is a normal time for dogs to bark and it isnt foreign if you wake up at 5:30
22. Dogs will lay in the middle of the road and you will go around them instead of them getting up.
23. Burritos have bones. Be careful when biting.
24. Belizians have exceptional hearing and sometimes speak three languages in one sentence. Be prepared.
25. Gas Stations are very rare and expensive... always have a full tank.
26. If you are running low on gas pray you are with Angel and he will know which house sells it .by the bucket....
27. Bathrooms always are a step up down or the floor is uneven. Make sure you are awake when walking.
This is all as of now. Yesterday went into Mexico with Angel to get passport stamped and check on some buses however since we did not stay longer than a day I only got another 10 day visa, so guess who has to go to the immigration office? Ugh o well.
The group from Texas is great they are hard working and getting a bunch of things accomplished.
Have a great day. Love to all! EB
